I just received a Legislative Summary that I wanted to share with you regarding the continued lack of a State budget which impacts all Michigan school districts:
This week the Legislature made no progress on passing a state budget as we move into the second week of September. Lawmakers are now two months past the July 1 statutory deadline to finalize a budget. There is no sign they intend to act with the urgency school districts require. We continue to be concerned that our governmental representatives in Lansing are not acting with urgency to prevent a government shutdown. Some school districts are already preparing to take out bank loans at high interest rates just to make payroll this fall, burdening them with long-term financial strain that will ripple into next year’s budgets. Pine River may be forced into that as well if our October State Aid payment doesn't come in a timely manner. A government shutdown will be triggered if a budget is not set by the constitutional deadline of October 1.
I, and superintendents across the State of Michigan, urge you to contact your legislators immediately and demand they fulfill their constitutional obligation to finalize a State / School Aid budget before October 1. Further delay is not harmless, it directly threatens classrooms, staff, and students across the State of Michigan.
On a brighter note, next Friday, September 12th, beginning at 5 p.m. is our Community Tailgate Event. We will be offering free entry to the first 200 people for the 7 pm football game against Houghton Lake and providing free meals for 250 community members. This is a great opportunity to celebrate a new school year and all of the great things that happen every day at Pine River Area Schools, and to cheer on our Bucks. I hope to see you all there! There are a lot of events coming up and here are two important ones...
1) Our Pine River Community Tailgate event is Friday, September 12th! The first 200 people will get into the game for free and we'll have free hotdog meals for the first 250. Our high school students will be facilitating games for kids before the football game as well. Should be fun!
2) Please note that the School Calendar has changed slightly, as attached. Homecoming Friday, September 26th, will be a half day for students instead of an early release. This year's Homecoming Parade will be in LeRoy, so we hope to see you all there to cheer on our Pine River Bucks!

As we wait on the State of Michigan to determine our 2025-26 school budget, FREE breakfast and lunch will continue through September 30, 2025. Unfortunately, until we receive a budget, we are in the wait and see mode and cannot guarantee free meals on and after October 1st. Please contact our State Legislators to stress how important this is to our students. As always, extra entrees and a la carte food items are available for purchase. Parents may load funds onto student accounts through PowerSchool or by sending cash or a check made payable to Pine River Food Service with the student. The State of Michigan is recommending that ALL FAMILIES complete the Education Benefits Form this year. Scan the QR code below to get the link for the form. This form is utilized to determine our State funding allocations. Thank you for your patience as we work through this time of uncertainty caused by the lack of State funding for the 2025-26 school year.
